If you own a car in NSW, you need to know the difference between these two inspections. One is for renewing registration, the other for getting unregistered vehicles back on the road.

Pink Slip (e-Safety Check)

A Pink Slip is the annual safety inspection required for vehicle registration renewal. It checks: brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, lights, seatbelts, windscreen, wipers, and structural condition. The result is electronically lodged with Transport for NSW.

Who needs it: Vehicles 5+ years old at registration renewal time.

Blue Slip (Unregistered Vehicle Inspection)

A Blue Slip is required when a vehicle has never been registered in NSW, has lapsed registration beyond 3 months, has been declared a write-off, or is an interstate transfer. It’s a more comprehensive inspection than a Pink Slip.

Who needs it: Newly imported vehicles from Japan, interstate transfers, rebuilt write-offs, and vehicles with expired registration.
